[quote=Ellsworth Toohey;11528]Hey, remember Nine, that weird CGI film about a group of ragdolls that are the only survivors after humanity is wiped out. Turns out it lost a shitload of money and is pushing the Weinstein Brothers towards bankruptcy:

You're confusing 9 with NINE. Who could imagine that a $90 million musical about Italian cinema would bomb? The hell you say.

By the way, DAYBREAKERS is really good. Almost great. Go see it.

really? i heard negative stuff about Daybreakers. I'll see it anyway.

What was good about it, just out of curiosity, it might be a couple months (if ever) before it comes overseas

Sorry to intercept the question meant for Foy but I caught this over the weekend and I agree with his assessment of "good, almost great" so I thought I'd chime in.

First off, it's an incredibly well-made film. The art direction, wardrobe, and cinematography are all top-notch. The world in which vampires live is a sight to see and they never spoon feed any of the needless information about it while still giving you an eye into the innovations they've had to make to survive as normally as possible.

All of the acting was very good IMO with the exception of the female lead. Sam Neill was excellent.

All of the vampire makeup is really cool, and there's some good, gory vampire kills later in the film.

What kept it from being great IMO is that the crux of the movie (the cure for the disease) didn't work for me. It was way too convenient. Also, I felt like Willem Dafoe's character was wasted potential.

Still worth checking out and it's good to see vampires be FUCKING VAMPIRES again after dealing with Twilight & "The Vampire Diaries".

Ah yes, you are correct. I had not even heard of this movie until just now. Still, the question remains, why would anyone think that audiences would want to see a musical about Italian cinema?

I'd be first in line for a giallo musical. Or, perhaps, DEODATO: The Musical.

Kidding aside, an Argento musical almost would make sense. Opera the opera!

Ooff! After just seeing her cameo on SNL's "Laser Cats," Sigourney Weaver is gonna need a lot of make-up if they ever do that Aliens 5 she's always talking about (assuming that Ridley Scott doesn't go through with his planned prequel).

finally saw AVP Requiem and it is better than the original.

which isn't saying a lot.

although just one predator was disappointing (even though the first two in the original died pretty quickly and lamely)

likewise, i could not have found the ability to care less about the human 'drama' of the movie. how about a movie with, at best, subtitles for the predator hunting crew that is going after a hive of aliens? just an hour and ten minutes of giant alien monsters hunting and killing other giant alien monsters? sure, you might lose that 13 year old girl demo that likes the shoe-horned halfass love story with the teenagers, but something tells me the 13 year old girl demo isn't what props up hollywood schlock like AVP.

also, what was with this movie and killing children?
the kid in the woods with his dad (graphically see a chest burster erupt from him), the Alien/Predator looking over the natal ward getting ready to eat a bunch of babies, the pregnant women getting injected (orally alien raped) and their unborn babies, we can only assume, devoured by aliens, and children constantly being about to be devoured.

when Feast killed the kid (er, spoiler if you haven't seen it) it was shocking and worked well with the movie's dark humor and while I dont consider myself a prude when it comes to horror AVP just felt mean-spirited about it and like it was more for pure shock value than to add any genuine horror (think we won't kill kids in our horror movie? screw the precocious 10 year olds, we're going after MF'n fetuses! we'll ABORT them with alien eggs!).

eh, maybe that's just me, but the whole movie left a bad taste in my mouth both for the stupid human element (the downfall of AVP and Transformers) and for the odd obsession with making sure they include as many child deaths as possible.

Saw Avatar yesterday with my dad. It was alright, though my father put it best when he said it was essentially The Last Samurai with aliens.

Daybreakers was good stuff. Legion was not.

Also, not new, but Rifftrax has Riff'd Dragon Wars, and it's glorious.
